YUSRULLAH MUSLIM SOCIETY OF NIGERIA

HISTORY OF YUSRULLAH MUSLIM SOCIETY OF NIGERIA

The Yusrullah Muslim Society of Nigeria, popularly known as Alasalatu Irorun Oluwa Loni, was founded on Saturday, 28th July 1984, by Alhaji Murtadha Abioye Akangbe, a distinguished banker and an administrator par excellence.

Before founding the society, Alhaji Akangbe had long nurtured a deep passion for the Dhikr of Allah and the eulogy of Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.), a devotion he practiced since childhood. Before the establishment of the society, he attended the Du’atu Rahman Asalatu Prayer Group in the Idikan area of Ibadan every Sunday morning with his two eldest sons.

In 1984, by the divine will of Allah, Alhaji Akangbe founded the Association with the support of friends and associates. The first prayer session was held at his private mosque in Iwo Road, Ibadan. In attendance were:Alhaji Murtadha Akangbe, Alhaji Ibrahim Aliu, Alhaji Moshood Akinyemi Akintayo, Alhaji Yusuf (Baba Ewe), Alhaji Kola Oyebamiji, Alhaji Mikaill Lanre Niran, Alhaji Ashimiyu Badmus, Alhaji Bunayimn Oke, Alhaji Tirimisiyu Oyetola, Alhaji Musbaudeen Alabi Olohun Ero, Alhaji Hamidu Adeniyi, Alhaji Musa Omotara, Alhaji Lateef Akuru, Luku Akiliapa, and the founder’s two sons, Tajudeen and Lateef Akangbe.

The Association was founded upon three principal objectives, which have evolved into its core activities:

  • Celebration of the praises of Allah and recitation of prescribed liturgies.

  • Invocation of blessings upon Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) in obedience to Allah’s command.

  • Recitation of selected supplications widely accepted as powerful and efficacious.

In 1987, the Women’s Wing of the Association was established, operating from the Apata residence of Alhaji Alliu. Eventually, both the men’s and women’s wings were merged into a joint Asalatu session held every Sunday.

Over time, the Association expanded across Nigeria and beyond, establishing numerous branches and uniting Muslims across social, cultural, and racial divides. Through its activities, members are constantly reminded of their duties to Allah, His Messenger, society, and one another.

The Society is widely recognized as a pioneer of modern Alasalatu movements in Nigeria and has inspired the formation of prominent groups such as NASFAT, QUAREEB, and others.

The Association was led by its founder, Alhaji Murtadha Abioye Akangbe, as the first President (1984–2007), before he voluntarily handed over leadership to Alhaji (Barr.) Abdul Fatai Adeniyi Badmus, who became the second President, while Alhaji Akangbe assumed the position of Chairman, Board of Trustees (BOT).

Following the passing of Barrister Badmus in 2012, Alhaji (Barr.) Abdul Razaq Akinjide Sadiq became the third President until January 2018. Leadership then passed to Alhaji (Engr.) Isiaq Adekunle Adeniran, who served as the fourth President (2018–2023). In January 2024, Barrister Akinjide Sadiq was re-elected as the fifth President, a position he holds to date.

To adapt to changing times, the Association’s stakeholders initiated a comprehensive restructuring process, led by a committee chaired by Dr. Tirimisiyu A. Gbolagade Oladimeji, an erudite scholar and former Provost of the Federal College of Education (Technical), Akoka, Lagos. The committee produced a strategic roadmap to rejuvenate and modernize the Society’s operations.

Over four decades, the Society’s pioneering efforts in modern Islamic propagation have fostered progress in Islamic education, awareness, and spiritual consciousness. Its prayer manual remains a key reference for many Alasalatu groups across Nigeria, attesting to its enduring influence.

Today, the organization proudly bears the name Yusrullah Muslim Society of Nigeria, duly registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), as it continues its divine mission of spreading the light of Islam.
